With the coming of the Roanoke & Southern Railroad in 1892, a sleepy crossroads becomes for a while in the early twentieth century the busiest freight station on the “Punkin’ Vine” rail line between Roanoke, Virginia and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. When Prohibition provided the impetus for a multimillion-dollar illicit whiskey business, Ferrum became the mercantile heart of the “wettest county” in the nation. A massive federal crackdown on the moonshiners in 1935, a devastating fire in 1940, and a greatly improved road system ended the heyday of the railroad village. Today no freight trains stop in Ferrum, and none of the six passenger trains that once served the village survives. Arguably a shadow of its former self, but the beneficiary of a colorful past, the village today is home to a few businesses, Ferrum College, The Blue Ridge Institute & Museum, and is one of the first stops on the Crooked Road: Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Heritage Trail.

Paperback

227 Pages

6" x 0.5" x 9"

A Night of Makin' Likker and Other Stories from the Moonshine Capital of the World

by Morris Stephenson

Veteran newspaper reporter Morris Stephenson shares decades of stories and personal accounts with both federal agent and moonshiner alike. During the colonial period Virginians whose antecedents were English or African came to the county from the east, while Pennsylvania Germans settled in its northern and western parts. Today the county is inhabited by the descendants of these pioneers, as well as more recent immigrants from other parts of the country who have been attracted to Smith Mountain Lake and the rural beauty of the region. All of them live together in a county that has a history unlike any other in Virginia.

The authors of Franklin County, Virginia 1786-1986: A Bicentennial History explored the rich vein of local, state, and federal records, as well as personal papers, to find the story of the county and its people.

Hardcover

552 pages

7.5" x 10.25" x 1.6"

Franklin County's Famous 1935 Moonshine Conspiracy Trial
Complete Daily Newspaper Accounts

Including Author Sherwood Anderson's Liberty Magazine Story
Compiled by Morris Stephenson, Beverly Merritt, and Angie Leary

The U.S Government’s actual transcripts of the 1935 Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy Trial were accidentally destroyed by nature several years/months after the trail had concluded.
