Franklin County, Virginia 1786-1986: A Bicentennial History
by John S. Salmon and Emily J. Salmon
Franklin County Bicentennial Commission
From its earliest beginnings Franklin County has been a crossroads. During the colonial period Virginians whose antecedents were English or African came to the county from the east, while Pennsylvania Germans settled in its northern and western parts. Today the county is inhabited by the descendants of these pioneers, as well as more recent immigrants from other parts of the country who have been attracted to Smith Mountain Lake and the rural beauty of the region. All of them live together in a county that has a history unlike any other in Virginia.
The authors of Franklin County, Virginia 1786-1986: A Bicentennial History explored the rich vein of local, state, and federal records, as well as personal papers, to find the story of the county and its people.
